Mark 1

God’s Servant: The Gospel according to Mark
Jesus’ Baptism & Temptation

Mark jumps right into the life of Jesus and the ongoing cosmic battle between God and Satan as he begins the gospel. Right away we are confronted with the servant motif. We also see that suffering and persecution are not foreign to Jesus and that He is triumphant.

God’s Servant: The Gospel according to Mark
Introduction

We begin looking at the Gospel of Mark today. This is the smallest of the 4 gospels and some say the oldest. It is filled with very descriptive accounts in Jesus life and presents the story in a very rich narrative fashion. The heart of the gospel is Jesus as servant. Jesus actions highlight His love and care for us, and serve as a model for how we should live our lives…

Final remarks: Stay True

As we wrap up our study in Hebrews, there are some great concluding commands given that we would be encouraged to learn from. All of these grow from the instruction that Jesus is better than what we have left behind. In Christ we are to look ahead and not dwell on what is behind. We are expected to live with eternity in view, so do we?

Hebrews 12

Hebrews
What are we living for?

The writer uses another analogy to describe the importance of living for God. He presents it in such a way that we are either living for Him or we are living in fear. Most of the world lives in tremendous fear, and too often we in the church follow suite. God is not to be feared but adored and worshipped. He loves us and has made a way for us to come to Him…

Running the Good Race

Like the Apostle Paul, the writer to the Hebrews draws from a sports analogy to bring home his point about living lives of faith and being faithful. The setting is one in a stadium where a running event is being staged. The audience is described; the runner and the judge are pictured. The race itself is the life we are called to live. The length is not given, perhaps because all of our races are different, but faithfulness is the key, are we faithful to the race we have been called to live?

Hebrews 11

Hebrews
Faith (Joshua to the NT): Am I willing to give All?

The writer concludes this great roll call of faith with a number of examples of those who gave freely and gave all to God. Faith does this, it makes us act in unconventional ways. It requires the pragmatic to take a hike and live in a way that we rely completely on God. Do we live by faith or is it foreign to us?

Hebrews 11

Hebrews
Faith (Moses): Will I leave Egypt when called?

Moses, the great lawgiver, is once again used as an illustration. Earlier (chapter 3) he was contrasted with the Faithful Son. Here his life serves as a model for the kind of faith we are called to live. While many episodes of faith could be used in Moses live, the author selects five episodes to demonstrate faith in the midst of an ungodly world. We too are called to faithfulness; but too often we refuse to leave Egypt or eschew its trinkets…

Hebrews 11

Hebrews
Faith (Abraham to Joseph): Do I trust my future to God?

Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph or who are called the Patriarchs (Fathers). These men formed the head of the nation of Israel and demonstrated great faith (as well as great weakness). They looked forward to the promises of God and did not really even begin to see the promises of God fulfilled. But they nevertheless believed God, would we do the same?

Hebrews 11

Hebrews
Faith (Abraham): Will I Live Where God Says?

Chapter 11 of Hebrews is often called the Heroes Hall of Faith as the writer uses a series of Old Testament illustrations to define and expand what Biblical Faith looks like. This chapter is rich in depth and it is incredible to think we are on equal footing with some of these giants of the faith. This equality of course only comes because of who our God is and what Jesus has done for us…

Warning #3: Don’t Lose Hope

This is the last of the major warning sections in the book of Hebrews. It is a fitting place for this warning after so clearly proclaiming that Jesus is the only way to God. Why stray from Him? Yet we struggle with the same things. We know we must be faithful, but too often life gets in the way and we lose hope…

Hebrews 10

Hebrews
Forgiveness, Part 2

These verses compose the final section of Hebrews main theological argument— Jesus is simply better. The writer here summarizes most of his previous points but also strives to re-emphasize how much better life in Christ is over the law. For us it is a reminder that being a follower of Christ is more than religion. We are called to follow…

Hebrews 9

Hebrews
Forgiveness, Part 1

This next section in the book of Hebrews forms the heart of why Jesus is better than the old covenant—He provides complete and final forgiveness and restoration. The old system had to be repeated constantly. Forgiveness was not guaranteed. Restoration to God was not assured. In Christ though we find complete forgiveness and acceptance by God!

Hebrews 9

Hebrews
Out with the Old, in with the New

As the writer continues to build his case for the superiority of Christ as our High Priest, he goes back to the illustration of the Tabernacle of Moses. This temporary worship center that the following Temples will copy served as the place for Israel’s worship. It was temporary though and tightly regulated. It was a picture of what was permanent in Jesus…
