Personal Resurrection

It is one thing to believe in Jesus resurrection, but what happens to me and my loved ones when we die? Jesus is God, resurrection makes sense for Him, but what about us? This personal nature to resurrection is important for several reasons. It gives hope, it provides a purpose for the sufferings we endure and it compels us to serve one another.

The Importance of the Resurrection

Can one be a follower of Jesus while also doubting His resurrection? Paul clearly says "No" as the resurrection is the keystone to all of Christianity. For many it is a stumbling block and hinderance to belief who want something provable and scientific; but that is the whole point of faith -  it can't be proven and scientifically or else it wouldn't be faith. If it is true, nothing else matters.

The Power of the Gospel

What separates Christianity from all other religions? It is the resurrection. The resurrection is the heart of the gospel, without it there is no good news just an obituary about a good religious man. Without the resurrection there is no hope for us defeating death or of God’s acceptance of Jesus as our substitute. Without the resurrection we are part of a 2,000-year-old scam. With the resurrection though is hope, life and forgiveness.

Spiritual Gifts, part 4

Paul’s final words on spiritual gifts seem to zero in on the main problem with gifts and Corinth: speaking in tongues. There seemed to be a worldly self-centered approach to this issue, and it was not in a worshipful way but an unloving and ungodly way. Paul emphasizes the importance of order out of chaos and decency out of fleshly behavior.

Spiritual Gifts, part 3

It is easy to reduce religion down to a series of commands: do this, don’t do that, clean your life up! Most people would prefer a religion that they have to simply obey; even if that religion asks them to do hard things. What God expects of His children isn’t simple obedience; God asks of us to do the impossible—love like He loves. Our words, thoughts and actions are to be bathed in His kind of love.

Spiritual Gifts, part 2

As God sovereignly distributes gift to His children, He has a purpose and a plan. All of us matter to accomplishing the goals God has for our church. In our unity there is diversity and, in our diversity,, there is unity. Not all of us see things the same, but together we can begin to function more fully as the body of Christ.

Spiritual Gifts, part 1

As he works through the questions and problems of the church, Paul places a huge emphasis upon the use of their spiritual gifts. He wants them to confidently use the blessings God has given them to ministry with and to one another; but they were using it as a weapon instead. Let us consider how God has gifted us and evaluate whether we too are using God’s blessings wisely.

Organization: Communion

Paul’s detailed instruction about observing Communion is the basis for how the church should partake of it. The gospels record the factual basis of the meal, but it is Paul’s instruction here that extends it into the normal activity of the church. There are 2 ordinances that we partake in, Baptism: a 1 time event; and Communion: a regular event. Both are intended to remind us of the unity we have together in Christ.

Organization: Women’s Roles

Paul begins a sub-section dealing with worship and church organization. The last few issues have been more outward focused, these next few are in-house issues. What is the church structured like? How is worship conducted and what are our roles? He begins with describing the role of women and uses head coverings as the point of emphasis

Liberty: Idolatry

As we exercise our liberty, great care must be taken so that we don’t slip down the slope of idolatry. It is possible to be so carefree in our life that we become careless in our walk with the Lord. Liberty is a means to reach all people with the gospel, but if we don’s set up safeguards, we may find ourselves drawn towards them and not them toward the cross.

Liberty: Run Well

Liberty is an incredible gift given to us as a means of reaching more people with the gospel. It is not meant as a means of personal freedom to do whatever we want to do or to exploit the Grace of God. Liberty allows us to be all things to all people so that some may come to faith; however, it requires discipline so that we don’t walk over the line and become compromised ourselves.
